Deleted my previous #BarbaraWalters portrait because I’d had a hectic day and it was not only unfinished (still is...) but I was also posting it while walking to pick up my kid from school and I didn’t really say anything about her as a person. Initially I thought I’d paint her to send out as my 2020 new year cards. Yes, she’s a strong female figure in media and a well-respected journalist, but I was going for the cute punchline. Then I started reading reports of her poor health/dementia and how she doesn’t leave her home anymore and it triggered something in me. It’s one thing to post shitty portraits on Instagram while I try to develop painting skills. While that’s painfully vulnerability for me (and maybe for viewers who endure the public growth process) my posts feel as vapid as teenage selfies. Meanwhile, a lifelong career journalist, author, tv host/personality grows old, falls ill and then becomes the news story. There’s a poetry, beauty/cruelty in that cycle. I’ve obviously got a lot more to learn when it come to painting skills, but I’m also finding that I need to say more with the paint. Substance over punchlines.
If we’re lucky, we’ll all grow old and I guess this Barbara Walters portrait painting experience got me thinking about what legacy/body of work/love you leave behind... once your body and mind DO begin to fail you.

One of my favorite television moments commentating on the #NelsonMandela historic visit to the US in the early 90s. This was the moment that inspired me to respond to that clarion call by Mandela to all South Africans living abroad, to go back home to help build a new democracy.
Astronaut #SallyRide aptly says, "You cannot be what you cannot see." My role models in the media in the 80s were women who were ruling the airwaves -- trailblazers like:
Happy to hear from younger women in the media, who tell me how
I influenced their careers in radio and television.
”Bear them you can, and bear them you will...”
(To be clear, I am not in this picture. I am currently under the covers) 😊
I am re-posting this from my yoga instructor back home in Chicago... who I just fricking adore 🙏🏻 Please please read what she posted👇

”When you go out into the woods, and you look at trees, you see all these different trees. And some of them are bent, and some of them are straight, and some of them are evergreens, and some of them are whatever. And you look at the tree and you allow it. You see why it is the way it is. You sort of understand that it didn’t get enough light, and so it turned that way. And you don’t get all emotional about it. You just allow it. You appreciate the tree.
The minute you get near humans, you lose all that. And you are constantly saying ‘You are too this, or I’m too this.’ That judgment mind comes in. And so I practice turning people into trees. Which means appreciating them just the way they are” -Ram Dass
Look through the lens of a tree. Less judgments. More compassion. Appreciate what is. Discover the beauty - within and with your fellow trees.
