→ ♪ I sold my soul to a three piece and he told me I was holy. He's got me down on both knees but it's the devil that's tryna hold me down.
Surprise! A long over due name change. I've been wanting to all summer but couldn't settle but I found something that felt right and has some meaning to me and my stories.
Anyway, this piece is a travel down memory lane. I was digging through my YouTube channel and was rewatching some of my really old videos. Some of you will recognize these three ships instantly from them. I've been writing them and their world for, jfc, over ten years. .
I've written them, I've vidded them, I've laughed and cried with them as I tortured them through endlessless tales. They may not all be the /main/ characters (except in their own respective side stories) but they all play a big part in the general story and in the protagonist life. I have grown a personal attachments to these three not only because I made them suffer through trials but I think they had some of the best character growth so this is my little tribute to them. .

Up until #2008’s #Cloverfield, I was largely dismissive of #foundfootage #horrormovies, given a lot of them give way to a false sense of reality filtered through a fictional narrative in the wake of “The Blair Witch Project”. But this movie restored my faith in what could be good if done well. Having the likes of superstar #JJAbrams & the talents of director #MattReeves & writer #DrewGoddard, really fast tracked this movie to being good from start to finish. As for its success not only measured by its quality but by the mere fact that it was released in #January, a time when movie studios typically dump product they want to forget. This movie took advantage of a middling film market to become one of the bigger hits of the year. “Cloverfield” at heart, is a seemingly low budget #horror movie with a big budget & a different spin on the #monstermovie by telling a story from the point of view of a basic consumer video camera as a mysterious monster, possibly from outer space, commits mass scale destruction on #NewYorkCity, all caught on video from a group of survivors in the thick of it. The human drama isn’t lost here & thanks to writer Goddard, it actually does carry weight to the film: Rob has accepted a job in Japan & as the film implies between now & then via home video, he was with Beth (#OdetteYustman). But now, they’ve split & it’s implied, on bad terms as revealed at Rob’s going away party, this all recorded by his best friend (#TJMiller). Then an earthquake, then a blackout, then people running out & then the head of the Statue of Liberty is flung onto the streets of NYC. Something is wrong & as the residents find out: NYC is under siege by a gigantic monster, leaving Rob & co. to rescue Beth. Part monster flick & part sci-fi, Cloverfield had my interest. While the character archetypes may be two dimensional, they’re minor compared to the scope of the film, which to be fair, is pretty ambitious for a found footage movie. But that’s not to say it’s not without its scares from a Manhattan subway tunnel of alien spiders & more, it all entertains. #31daysofhorror #horrormovies #october2019 #physicalmedia #filmanthropic DAY 21

Cloverfield (Matt Reeves, 2008)
A film that got the masses frothing at the mouth with its incredibly cryptic marketing campaign, which helped cement its reputation as one of the most iconic pieces of cinema in the found-footage genre. Produced by J.J. Abrams, Reeves’ Kaiju Film for the digital age sees a group of Manhattanites celebrating a going away party for their friend, on the night of an attack on New York City by an unidentified alien monster. Now, whilst I did enjoy this a fair amount, I thought that despite its offering of really gnarly monster movie thrills, that it’s attempts at Verite were somewhat half-baked. The found-footage aesthetic does lend itself to some really intense sequences, that unlike its countless imitators give you a clear sense of scale whilst visually and aurally bombarding you. But it essentially traps you with it’s rather uninteresting protagonists, who I failed to be invested in for the most part, especially with T.J. Miller as our central POV character, whose angsty improv joking clashes horribly with the carnage being depicted (the writing also has an ill-fitting Whedonesque kind of vibe thanks to his collaborator Drew Goddard, who wrote the script here). Admittedly my glee at the urban devastation being wrought was probably not the intended reaction from the filmmakers, so I can imagine others eliciting feelings of horror and terror at the increasingly hopeless sense of unstoppable terror. Either way, it’s a novel spin on traditional Kaiju films, one in which it’s nail-biting action more than makes up for any narrative short-comings. In the first film, a group of friends flee for their lives as a giant monster lays waste to Manhattan.
I hate found footage films. That being said, this is the absolute best of them. It's brilliantly shot so that a. It looks like an idiot shot it while b. It still feels like an expert shot it. The balance is perfect.
The decision to put the brilliantly funny T.J. Miller's character in command of the camera for most of the movie was the next best move. Right from the beginning of his time with it, he's doing hilarious things like fucking up a party documentation job. His lines are great spirit lifters in an otherwise fairly gloomy story. His name is Hud too, which gamers will get cause a HUD is short for Heads Up Display in a first person game.
NYC is a gorgeous fucking city, so it's great to see a ground-level sprint through some fantastic locales, and to see glimpses of the mayhem through the lense or on the news. There is a sequence where they have to climb up a building and jump onto another leaning building's roof that is stellar.
The actors are very interesting and all reactions genuine. I especially love the sad little central subplot revolving around Rob and Beth. An incredible touch is that, through a moronic blunder by Hud, the footage is taped over footage of Rob and Beth's sweet little day at Coney Island a month earlier and it cuts in and out as the events of the film unfold.
If one pays close attention to the final scene, one can see the monster plummeting from the sky, indicating that this is part of an alien invasion, so any confusion over links to subsequent instalments shouldn't exist IMO. But there's nothing quite like this movie and all involved should be commended. Matt Reeves is gifted.
Moral of the story: Tell your lady how you feel. 💔

Because the Transformers franchise has become an unwieldy cloud of toxic waste over the years, most seem to have forgotten how enjoyable the first one was. Michael Bay gets an awful rap for these, and by all means he deserves any shade thrown his way for some of the sequels, but I’m still convinced they only got made to cash in on the massive Asian market, I’ve heard that stuff like this is huge over there. This first film is a little saner and a lot more focused though, with a sort of 90’s Amblin infused vibe crossed with big budget CGI disaster mayhem of our current era, which is par for the course in a film directed by Michael Bay, as are lens flares, a grossly backlit slow motion kissing scene, explosions, fetishistic attention to the details of military protocol, montages of various factions of Americana playing out and um...cameos from loud sassy African American actors. Based on the Hasbro toy of the same name as well as probably an animated show that came before it, Bay ramps up the scale, special effects, human characters and exposition to somewhat plausibly set the Autobots and Decepticons loose in our world, engaged in noisy warfare over the All Spark, a cube of untold power that looks not so distantly related to the Tesseract. Caught in the middle is Shia Lebeouf as Sam Witwicky, a nervous teen whose family history hides something related to the Tranformers mythology, naturally sending him and the obligatory super hot love interest (Megan Fox) on a wild goose chase of stuff blowing up. There’s also various military factions caught up in the squabble including intrepid soldiers Josh Dumahel, Amaury Nolasco and Tyrese Gibson, research scientists Rachael Taylor and Anthony Anderson, Jon Voight as the grave Secretary of defense, John Turturro in pure comic relief form as a hapless federal agent and uh... Bernie Mac too, as the world’s saltiest used car salesman. The Shia Lebeouf angle has a cool 90’s sort of Joe Dante vibe, right down to the presence of consummate 90’s dad Kevin Dunn, naturally playing Sam’s father. While it goes a little off the rails in a final battle that pretty much levels an entire city to the ground and numbs any sense of realism

Nota personal: 5'5

There’s a lot of ideas running around in David S. Goyer’s The Unborn, ideas that a terrific cast do their best with but ultimately this was one big WTF of a letdown, a boring waste of time that deserved better execution than it got. It’s essentially another Exorcist retread, given a twist, with Odette Yustman (whatever happened to her? She was sort of like Megan Fox Lite) playing a girl who is tormented by something called a Dybbuk, some sort of mythological Jewish entity but also just a fancy way of saying demon. It has something to do with her unborn twin who never made it past utero, her institutionalized mother (Carla Cugino, wasted in a heavily cut role) as well as history dating back to Joseph ‘Angel of Death’ Mengele, the infamous Nazi surgeon who had an obsession with twins, a theme that also plays on here. This thing haunts and eventually possesses her, until she finds help from two priests played by Gary Oldman and Idris Elba, in roles beneath their talent. There’s one nicely written scene where she and her boyfriend (Cam Gigandet, who can’t act to save his life) ponder the universe and all its terrors while in bed that would have been better brought to life by different actors. Various scenes show her interaction with her loving father (James Remar), but they’re underdeveloped and feel edited. Mostly it’s just her running from freaky scuttling apparitions, loose plot threads hanging about like wires in an abandoned warehouse and just.. bleh. There’s definitely something there in terms of brainstorming script ideas, but they screwed it up big time by making a haphazard, boring, generically glossy PG-13 dud instead of putting some actual style, personality and genuinely frightening elements in. Big ol’ missed opportunity. It’s a shame, because there’s some neat, spooky special effects thrown at the wall here that deserve a better film, and I’d expect better from Goyer too. Oh well.
Espero que gostem! C=
