Someone tell me why?? Did you have to go
And leave my world so cold
Reality Check - 28 year old, Ashanti Johnson, fails to impress the American Idol judges (‘07)
I wrote this song “River” with a couple of local gals known around here as @crimsoncmusic , I’ve known these ladies for going on 10 years. I brought them this poem and this song is what we made with it! **clip from recent performance at @alleytapsnashville for @thenashup615 **
Ok this one is pretty special. I saw this when it came out and I have loved this movie ever since. In fact, my adoration and appreciation has only grown over time, as I've gotten older and better able to translate the language of film.
Robots is a 2005 animated children's movie that, according to Google, is a scifi/romance and I love that. The film follows the life of Rodney Copperbottom, a robot who wants to be an inventor. But he's the humble son of a dishwasher robot in little Rivet Town. When he attempts to help his dad with an invention, but fails and, with his determination to succeed, heads to Robot City to meet Bigweld, his hero, and change the world. But it isn't what he expected.
Obviously this was a funny Robin Williams movie as a kid, but as I've gotten older I've appreciated the more progressive messages running through it, like the fact that the father is wildly loving and supportive of his son in pursuing his dreams, no matter what, and how he's so proud of his son no matter what. Or maybe that the film critiques corporate America and its many failings, like allowing entitled men in positions of power abuse that power and engage in workplace sexual harassment, and how corporations profit off of the misery of the poor. The most obvious analogy is with health care, as robots who get outmoded are essentially living on borrowed time. But there's also statements being made about the marketing and sale of commodities, with the promise that they'll fulfill you. As a contrast to the corporate villains, there's also the fact that the heroes have a communal living arrangement, and they rely on each other. Or the fact that Ratchet is the public face of capitalism, shiny and desirable, while Gasket is the true face: ugly, industrial, and billowing smoke.
A hilarious film for children with amazing jokes that only the parents can enjoy, it also imparts a lot of great messages that are wildly relevant today. If you liked it as a kid, I promise you'll like it even more now. And if you didn't like it as a kid, give it another chance. Odds are it'll really resonate now.
Freddie? Am I hallucinating or are we surrounded by 2,000 Randy Jacksons?

@michaeljackson.soldiersoflove "Victory Tour was a concert tour of the United States and Canada by The Jacksons between July and December 1984. Jacksons netted approximately $36 million, which worked out to about $7 million for each brother. Michael, who alone did not need the money, donated his share of the proceeds from the tour, approximately $5 million ($12 million in 2018 dollars), to three charities, as he had promised, including the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia and Cancer Research, the United Negro College Fund, and Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. He had also received an $18 million advance ($43 million in 2018 dollars) from Sullivan for a Michael Jackson designer jeans brand, few of which were ever produced and sold before Sullivan had to stop production.
