The power of the active layer depends mainly on the climatic conditions of the area, ground conditions and moisture of the soil and the nature of the vegetation cover. On the technical side, the determination of the power of the active layer, as well as the study of the humidity of the heaving soils (clay, chalk), which, when freezing in volume, cause the rise of the upper strata of the soil and the deformation of the buildings, are of great importance.
